Color Washing

What steps do I need to follow to do a color washing technique?

COLOR WASHING

This technique is a very soft effect used to simulate a fresco finish. It also allows for creating a very rustic look.

Tools:
Bucket of water
Rag
Cheesecloth or brush

Paint:

Latex eggshell or semi-gloss

Glaze:
One third paint
One third glazing liquid
One third floetrol
(Mixture may be thinned with water)

TECHNIQUE:

1. Dirty water with about half an ounce of paint
2. Wet rag or cheesecloth with dirtied water and wring out rag.
3. Apply paint to surface in a crisscross motion.
4. Spread paint with dirtied cloth in a circular motion, using a very light touch. Do not was off completely. Just soften enough to allow basecoat to show through.
5. A wash allows you to achieve variance of color and a soft cloudy effect.

HINTS:
*If you want to add a second color, make sure to change your rag and dirty water with new color.
*Make sure to finish edges and corners.
*Don't try to do areas that are to large. (6-9ft)
*Allow each coat to dry completely.
